The online dating website RomancesNearby.com appears to be a great dating portal. On the homepage, we can see a selection of female members’pictures. The website claims to have good matches for people who are looking for a date with a woman, worldwide. But all this information is wrong.
The profiles on the homepage and in the members´ area are fake. These fake profiles are managed by operators. An operator controls more than one fake profile. The purpose of both is to encourage the clients into a conversation. That is exactly where the rip-off starts, as the user must pay for sending messages.
Payments occur just after the free registration. The website informs users about the costs in the pricing section. The website requires a paid subscription for buying ‘’credits’’ to be able to chat with other members. For example, 10 credits cost €16. Each message costs €1,6. The more credits you buy, the lower the cost per message.
Use of fake profiles
The online dating website mentions the use of fictional profiles on the homepage. This notification is displayed on the very bottom of the homepage. Thus, this important information is almost hidden.
In the terms and conditions, we read more about the use of fake profiles and the fake chat
3.1 RomancesNearby.com is a platform for users to chat with fictive profiles. […] Profiles marked with a heart icon are fictive profiles.
5.2 RomancesNearby.com has entertainment as its goal, it is explicitly not the purpose of RomancesNearby.com to establish dates or meetings in person.
5.3 Notify Direct Marketing B.V. explicitly reserves the right to send calls on RomancesNearby.com through self-created profiles. These are fictitious profiles with which no physical agreements are possible.
Unclear information regarding fictional profiles
The operators will get in touch with a new member just after the registration has been made. But, they will not identify as a fictional person at the beginning of the chat. In the terms and conditions, we can read that a fictional profile is marked with a heart icon. But the heart icon does not contain the information that this profile is fictional.
Also, we read some reviews by former users who had a very bad experience. They claim that all profiles have this icon. The operator of the website is Notify Direct Marketing BV who are based in Krimpen aan den Ijssel, in the Netherlands. This company is already known for other scam dating websites.
